Pot can be chemically addictive, but to abuse it to that point requires an enormous amount of stupidity and free time. Long-term recreational users report mild mood and sleeping disruptions, but for the majority of people you can go without weed after smoking/inhaling it for months and not notice any ill-effects.
The same can not be said of alcohol and opiates. Luckily being drunk or buzzed has an immediate effect on your body when you come down (hangovers) so it discourages use, but opiates are dangerous in that they do not usually produce hangovers. It's - at first - all euphoria for no negatives. But then you're stuck in a painful addiction. Not one nearly as bad as being addicted to alcohol or Xanax, but still terrible.
