I smoked Hawaiian and Afghan pot in the 70s that was as effective anything they have now.

Yes, the average strength overall is much higher due to the proliferation and breeding of these types of exotic strains, which were pretty rare then.

On the other hand Mexican dirt weed or Nebraskan ditch weed isn't really any stronger than it ever was, which is what most people smoke. .

That's a fair point. Although with increased potency comes less usage, at least in my experience, and it is the smoke that is really bad for you... so if there aren't any increased addiction or psychosis risks, higher potency may even be healthier in the long run.
