Its getting to the point where it might be time to start cracking down on unpaid internships. It truly is exploitation, if the alternative is no chance of getting in the front door.
Its almost as if getting a decent job is conditional on surviving a period of indentured servitude in these cases.

The best thing to do is realize that IT blows and find another career. Unless you like abuse and getting screwed. The industry is notorious for the way it's low level workers are mistreated and underpaid.
