The attacking of wikipedia is very old-hat by now. Everyone knows that everything written in a wiki article cannot be taken on blind faith. However, to pretend that the wiki isn't the greatest source of general info with references to very legitimate source material that serves as the best jump-off point for general inquiries is to pretend to sheer ignorance. I find it perfectly indispensable.
Actually citing a wiki article itself for serious reasons of argument is not the best idea, but the wiki is the single best public source for the mining of primary and secondary source material, without contest.
