Meh. The people who go the private schools are the ones who can afford it, or who've been given a ride. Private schools can charge whatever they want...because they're private. Its not as though anyone is forced to attend. Things only cost what people are willing to pay.

The vast bulk go to public schools...and the cost of some of those truly is obscene. There is just no acceptable reason for it. In my day, (all of a decade ago) it cost less than $5000 a year for tuition.

Living expenses are another story, and depend on what sort of lifestyle the student demands. I worked a job and supported myself out of pocket, for the first couple years anyways. Then I scored sweet scholarships. People get into trouble when they live la vida loca on credit for years at a time. The actual cost isn't indicative of school expenses, but their choice of living expenses.

Right now we pay an average of $5800 a year, according to that chart. Its not the end of the world. Over four years its the cost of a cheap car.

Some people pay more, and suffer, and some pay very little, and skate by with no worries.

Capping it...could make sense. But then the college has to cover the shortfall by making cuts. Programs get axed. Facilities get mothballed.

Can't make something come from nothing.

Tbf $5800 is a lot less than what most English students 2 years below me will have to pay - £9k is the cap. The top uni's here charge as much as they can under the cap (as do most uni's though) and then are subsidised on top of that to keep them at the level they are at. For example if I could have got into Cambridge or Oxford, I'd still only have to pay £3.2k a year.

A cap would just make sense if the fee is rising so rapidly, surely that can't be in line with costs?

The whole culture is out of whack. People look down on cheaper schools, even people in the know. Case in point is my life...I got into some cheaper state law schools (North Dakota) but was encouraged to go to the more expensive up and coming law-school.

college is expensive because there are too many people in college being given money. colleges have found that if they lower acceptance criteria and bump the amount allowed in, as well as increase prices, they get obscene amounts of moeny, because people keep on complaining about how expensive college is and government keeps on upping their subsidies. dropping subsidies will make demand plummet, lowering prices. it will also free us from the madness that college should be for everyone.
