Actually, as every indicator attests, the overwhelming majority of everyone on the planet Earth went with the hard g. The reason this is so is because the only rational interpretations lead to the hard g. The only reason the soft g was ever offered was because the inventor's stupid marketing ploy that played off of "choosy mothers chose Jiff" peanut butter advertising: "choosy programmers choose 'gif.'" I believe this makes Steve Wilhite, much like the anonymous contributor to the Quarterly Review sounding off on his/her preference for aluminium, a douchebag.
