Its a hard G and just sounds wrong any other way.
I know a lot of people with Germanic last names and they can't even come close to saying their own last names right. Not to mention the amount of absurdity in city names:
Mexia, TX - No, its not "Mex -ee - ah", its like hey - "Mah - hey - uh"
Palestine, TX - No, its not like the country, its "Pal - es - steen"
Miami, OK - Its not "My - am - me" like the city in Flordia, no! Its "My -am - uh"
I put no faith in people to say words correctly.
