Hard G is correct. No question about it. Unless someone can show that .gif originated from a French (or other foreign) word.

Giant, giraffe, gin, etc - all french (or european) basis.

Its not like these words came suddenly into the english language and we had guys sitting around a room going, "Ok, Giant - lets pronounce the g as a j. Next word..."

Again. It simply does not matter what other words are. At all. Other words are irrelevant.

Because .gif is not an actual word with any sort of etymology at all! Its an acronym.

Phonetics matter. And phonetically, either is perfectly valid, though of course the soft G was intended from the start, a lot of people just messed it up.

And English has a lot of words derived from other languages. That doesn't matter either, as its just how the english language was constructed.

I mean...giraffe can be traced back through English to Old English to archaic French to the vulgar Latin of the early dark ages to the Classical Latin some Roman soldier was grunting as he was humping some proto-French camp follower during the Gallic Wars.

.gif on the other hand is just a nerd speak acronym for a file format with a peanut butter-based bit of marketing.

We can list ALL KINDS of acronyms with weird vocalizations if we want.
